Jane Austen

I think I'm the only person out there that is not a Jane Austen fan.  I read Sense & Sensibility and Pride & Prejudice about 10 years ago.  I didn't enjoy either but everybody else did so I tried to like them.  Then I watched the forever long Pride & Prejudice movie.  This was forced upon my by roommates that only watched Jane Austen movies on Sundays.

Anyways, I want to try and read or reread a Jane Austen novel.  Why?  While Drew was in London last week I downloaded Becoming Jane.  The funny thing is I really liked it.  So I'm wondering which book I should read.   What's your favorite Jane Austen novel?

my favorite is pride and prejudice, but i'd recommend emma if you don't want to re-read P&P. it might be fun if you watch "Clueless" before you read Emma.

do NOT start with northanger abbey.

I really liked Mansfield Park.

I like them all. I actually love Northanger Abbey, but I listened to it on tape. I think Emma or Pride and Prejudice are the best to start out with. I don't think you should start out with Persuasion.

Jane Austen can be ponderous on first read, but if you have time and patience, it grows on you. I first read Pride and Prejudice when Chrislynn played the littlest sister in USU's stage production, and I loved it. I guess my second favorite is Emma, followed by Sense and Sensibility.

to clarify - i like northanger abbey too, but i don't recommend it as a starter read. it's just a teensy bit weird.

My favorite is Persuasion, but it's not quite as upbeat as Pride and Prejudice or Emma.

It was interesting to read everyone else's comments - we all have such different takes on things :) Emma and Mansfield Park were long and slow for me. Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion are probably my favorites. Sense and Sensibility is good too :) Northanger Abbey is the only one I haven't read.

Let us know which one you pick!

I loved Pride & Prejudice. I have not read any of her other novels - I think I will take a cue from the family and read a couple more of them!
